Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has vowed to work harder after winning the Football Writer Association’s Player of the Year. The England international was an influential figure for the Reds in the centre of the park as they won their maiden Premier League in record fashion with seven matches to spare.

Unlike Manchester City’s Kevin de Bruyne, Henderson did not sparkle in the form of goals and assists, but he was still voted as the FWA Player of the Year due to the leadership en route to ending the club’s 30-year wait for the league title. Henderson was definitely pleased with the accolade received and he has vowed to make further improvements to his game, he told: "There's been a lot of hard work since I was a kid always wanting to get better and improving, be the best that I can be, and that's what I'll continue to do until I stop playing football.

So far I've improved I feel every single season and I just want to continue to do that."
The former Sunderland man sustained a knee injury which kept him out of the end of the season, but that did not stop him from lifting the trophy after the club’s 5-3 win over Chelsea at Anfield. The Reds are now expected to go on a break of around two weeks before returning to pre-season training for next term.
While the Premier League campaign starts on September 12, the Reds will be in action as early as August 31 when they are scheduled to play in the Community Shield. It is unclear whether Henderson would recover in time to face the winners of the FA Cup in either Arsenal or Chelsea. The Reds have won the Shield on 15 occasions – the last of which came in 2006 when they beat the Blues by a 2-1 scoreline.
