Martin Skrtel has rejected the offer of a new contract from Liverpool

Defender Martin Skrtel has rejected the offer of a new contract from Liverpool by claiming that it was not what he expected.

The Slovakian has become one of the Premier League’s top defenders over the last few years. It is an unimaginable improvement from the player, who made a shaky start in his first few matches for the club. Skrtel maybe a top name in his business, but it is thought that Liverpool will listen to offers for the player. He has been constantly linked with clubs like Napoli – and even Manchester United – in the last few months.

The speculation could increase in the coming weeks after Skrtel has not signed a new contract. He has even gone on to say that the offer on the table is almost unacceptable for a player in the peak of his career. Skrtel has failed to disclose the exact details of the contract, but he said that this would have been ideal for a player with persistent injury problems or at the end of their careers. He stated that this was not the case and hence demanded an improved offer from the Merseyside club. Skrtel has been at Liverpool since 2008, but he will have only one year left on his existing deal.

“I am still waiting for the new contract. I think a contract like this is offered to players who are much older than me or to players who have had some health complications. But I feel good and not so old to sign this contract. Also I think my health is OK. The contract offered is unacceptable for me; this is the reason why I didn’t sign it. I still have a contract running with the club. There was some speculation about interest from other clubs but that is not coming from me,” said Skrtel.
