Klopp fancies Sadio Mane to match Mohamed Salah’s scoring feat

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp believes Sadio Mane has the opportunity to match Mohamed Salah’s recent scoring record with the Reds. The Egypt international recently became the second Reds player after Michael Owen to score 20 goals for three seasons on the spin and Klopp has fancied Mane to replicate the feat next term.

He told: “I don’t think he needed that goal to do that, but it helps obviously that people [will] remember you. Incredibly important goal, a super performance – a really, really good game of Mo. He is an outstanding striker, a world-class striker. It’s really nice, I’m really happy for him that he reached that mark and I think Sadio (Mane) has the chance to do similar stuff. That would be really cool.”

Liverpool have thoroughly dominated the Premier League campaign and they are a staggering 25 points ahead of Manchester City at the top of the table. As a result, it is only a matter of games before they are formally announced as the new English champions and the club’s supporters will definitely savour the moment, given the Reds have not won the league during the Premier League era.

Meanwhile, the Merseyside outfit won’t have any other trophy to play for the rest of the season after bowing out of the FA Cup and Champions League in quick succession. The Merseyside outfit were ousted from the FA Cup at the fifth round after a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea on the road where Klopp took the decision to play a slightly weakened side.

However, there were no excuses for the Champions League ouster at the hands of Atletico Madrid. The Reds were trailing by a 1-0 score after the away leg of the round of 16 and they could not take the advantage of the second leg at Anfield. Klopp’s side took the game to added extra-time with a 1-0 lead but they eventually suffered a 3-2 defeat (4-2 loss on aggregate).
