Gary Lineker speaks about Liverpool’s season after Manchester derby

Sky Sports pundit Gary Lineker has applauded the efforts of Liverpool over the course of the campaign while saying that Manchester City have made an ‘enormous’ achievement to stay ahead of the Merseyside giants. The Citizens recently jumped to the top of the table with a one-point lead over Jurgen Klopp’s side after they got the better of Manchester United in the derby.

Shortly after the game, Lineker was appreciative of the achievements of both teams during the league campaign and insisted that the Citizens have been sensational to stay ahead of the Reds, he tweeted: “Manchester City are a sensational side. The fact that Liverpool are only one point adrift of them is a huge achievement. Liverpool are an outstanding side. The fact that Manchester City are one point ahead of them is an enormous achievement. What a season.”

The Citizens have been under pressure over the course of the season with the Reds relentlessly chasing them for the title. As such, the midweek Manchester derby had been identified as a potential make or break for them but they managed to progress with flying colours with a comfortable 2-0 triumph at Old Trafford.

With the result, the Mancunian giants are now three games away from the Premier League title but they should be fancied to retain the crown, considering they have a winnable fixture schedule without the interference of Champions League football. The Citizens are scheduled to face Burnley on the road this weekend and they can anticipate another match where the opposition would be playing on the defensive.

The Clarets recently surprised Chelsea with a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge and the Citizens would need to curb the physical threat from the opposition, if they are to prevail. Pep Guardiola’s side only managed a 1-1 draw during the previous meeting at Turf Moor.
